Brushing and Flossing Tips

find dentistsIt might surprise you to know that brushing teeth has been around for a really long time. Of course the brush itself has come a long way from using wood twigs, animal hair or bamboo. Also the toothpaste has evolved a lot from our ancestors using charcoal, crushed bones or oyster shells! Some cultures then started using herbs and salt as toothpaste. Toothbrushes as we see them today with nylon bristles only were introduced around World War II. Now we have reached the other end of the spectrum where we have too much choice. Toothbrushes are either manual or automatic and then have grades such as hard, medium and soft. For toothpaste choices only sky is the limit with hundreds of flavors, cleaning agents, shapes and sizes. But in spite of all these choices, the basic method of effective brushing to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth remains unchanged.

If you are brushing effectively it doesn’t matter if your toothbrush is electric or manual, both will be equally efficient to remove bacteria from your teeth. Let’s look at some tips for effective brushing. Most people ask a dentist which is the best toothbrush they should use. The answer is quite simple the one you feel most comfortable using. If the toothbrush is not comfortable for you, you won’t be able to brush well and the result is that even the best toothbrush won’t be able to help you. Another important factor for the toothbrush, it should be soft on your gums, the brush should not hurt or bleed your gums. So if you tend to hold the brush hard against your teeth and gums, pick a really soft bristles brush whereas if you hold it very gently you can pick a medium or hard. Remember you can never go wrong with soft bristles because brushing doesn’t require aggressive action rather it needs a gentle thorough action.

Replace your brush every three months even if the brush doesn’t look worn out. Over time bacteria builds up on the brush so it is important to keep replacing your brush often. After and before brushing, clean your brush thoroughly and you should let your brush air dry itself. Don’t keep brushes in closed containers as it promotes bacterial growth on the brush. Never share your toothbrush as you will just be contracting infections from the other person. Your brush should be able to reach all your teeth both front and back comfortably, if your brush is too large to reach the back of the molars you need a smaller brush.

For selecting the right toothpaste, again first and foremost you should like the toothpaste you use, if you don’t like it, you won’t brush well and hence any toothpaste will not be effective. Your toothpaste must have fluoride in it. Fluorides preserves the enamel of your teeth, enamel is the top white layer on the teeth so if the enamel is preserved your teeth look white and also you don’t feel hot and cold sensation on your teeth. It also protects your teeth from decay and cavities. Also be careful to not swallow any toothpaste because the same fluoride which is good for your teeth is really bad for you.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day and don’t forget to floss at least once after dinner. Flossing is very important even if you brush regularly because flossing removes food particles in between your teeth where brush bristles won’t be able to reach. Also remember not to over brush, brushing should take anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. A good rule of thumb is to spend 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth.

find dentistsDon’t brush hard, be gentle on your teeth. If you brush too hard, you are hurting your teeth and your gums. Also the best brushing action is either circular or up and down. For effective brushing you can brush 1 or 2 teeth at a time in circular motion. It is possible that you don’t brush the right way and it is very difficult to change now since it is a strong habit but you should try to remember to brush effectively and soon you will develop a habit. If you are a parent it is extremely important that you teach your children how to brush the right way.

Last but not the least, no matter how effective you are in brushing, it doesn’t fill the need of going to the dentist twice a year. Brushing can never remove all plaque and tartar, so you need the dentist cleaning to remove it to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

Hi Emma, we see your concern. One thing we can say for sure these teeth whitening products advertised on tv or online will never be able to do as good a job as a dentist can. So we recommend you should see a dentist for this.
